About
In March of 2004 a number of public court tennis players came together out of concern for the maintenance of our Park Board tennis courts, and the programming available at these public facilities. The physical condition of the courts was seen as the matter of first importance, and after several meetings the group undertook to do a city-wide study on the state of the Park Board courts in Vancouver, and to develop a report that would give a player’s view of court quality, court maintenance, and possible means of facilitating extended hours of play. That report was produced, and in January 2008, presented to Park Board. The document included:
- an inventory of Park Board tennis courts.
- the tennis committee’s recommendation for a court standard.
- suggestions of priority for repair and upgrade.
- a plea for facilitation of more evening play with lighting at certain locations.
- a declaration of the crying need for a public indoor tennis facility in Vancouver.
- a recommendation that Park Board accept a committee of public court tennis players, such as they who produced the report, as consultants in making its decisions concerning tennis.
This web site is a consequence of that committee’s work. Much of the information on these pages was originally drawn from their report. Data has been updated to reflect court repairs and refurbishments where they have occurred, and is now available on this site’s Courts and court ratings page. Vancouver Public Tennis intends to be a voice for those original volunteers, and other players who more recently have begun to volunteer their time to try to improve opportunities to play tennis on public tennis courts in Vancouver.
